Never Rowed Before?

No rowing experience is needed to join. Most alumni and members of the team never rowed before college. In fact, 3 time World Champion, 2004 Olympic Gold Medalist, and 2008 Olympic Bronze Medalist, Bryan Volpenhein, got his rowing start right here at OSU. People with no rowing experience join the novice team. During fall practices, the novice teams learn the basics of rowing and do light workouts. Practice times vary throughout the day so anyone can come according to his or her daily schedule. As the year rolls on, novice rowers compete nationally at the novice level. In the fall the novice women battle neighborhood rival Dayton Flyers, and the novice men race in the Wolverbuck Dual: a head-to-head sprint race with the University of Michigan crew team which is held on the same day as the football game and in the host city.
