Never Rowed Before?
Rowing is a unique sport in the sense that you can start in college, compete on a national level, and possibly go on to join the national team/Olympic team. Most rowers on collegiate teams across the country won’t have rowing experience prior to college, in fact, many alumni and members of the team never rowed before college. Three times World Champion, 2004 Olympic Gold Medalist, and 2008 Olympic Bronze Medalist, Bryan Volpenhein, got his rowing start right here at OSU.
People with no rowing experience join the novice team. During fall practices, the novice teams learn the basics of rowing technique. Practice times vary throughout the day so anyone can come according to his or her daily schedule. As the year rolls on, novice rowers compete nationally at the novice level.
Open Boat Houses
To find out more about the team come to the Drake Union for an Open Boathouse to speak with the team. These will take place within the first week of the school year.
Feel free to attend any practice time per day. Practice times are listed below. You don’t need to attend the same practice time every day. Novice practices are held at the Drake Union Boathouse by the Olentangy River, located between Lincoln and Morrill Towers. Times will be specified closer to the beginning of the season.
