Coach Madden is a native of Philadelphia, where he rowed four years with both LaSalle College High School and Saint Joseph’s University. At LaSalle he gained experience in both sculling and sweep rowing, and earned numerous Catholic League and Philadelphia City championships in addition to Stotesbury Cup silver and bronze. Recruited to row at Saint Joe’s, he sat stroke seat of the Freshman 8 that won bronze at Dad Vail’s. Tom went on to sit bow seat of the Varsity Lightweight 8 that won Dad Vail’s and competed in the Temple Challenge Cup of the Henley Royal Regatta, where the crew competed against 70 crews and earned a spot in the final 16.
Previously, Coach Madden coached at LaSalle College High School, gaining experience with both the Boys Freshman Lightweight 8 and the Varsity Lightweight 8, the later rowed to a 4th place finish at the Stotesbury Cup Championships.
Coach Madden’s came to Ohio State to coach the Novice Men in the fall of 2006. In Coach Madden’s first year his boats enjoyed wins over Franklin Pierce and Michigan State in dual racing as well as a 2nd place finish in the Frosh/Novice Lightweight 8 at the Indianapolis Invitational, a 3rd place finish in the Frosh/Novice 8 at MACRA’s and a 1st place finish at MACRA in the Frosh/Novice 4. At the Dad Vail Championships, his Frosh/Novice Lightweight 8 took 6th place in a very competitive race. The Frosh Novice 4 earned a silver in the largest field of the Dad Vail regatta. Last year he coached a novice four to a National Championship that won every race they finished.
Coach Madden is entering his fourthyear at The Ohio State University and will take over the Varsity Men’s team.
Also in his time at Ohio State he has earned a USRA Level III coaching certification.
