Coach Vanicek is originally from Cincinnati, where he attended St. Xavier High School and rowed for Cincinnati Junior Rowing Club. At CJRC he earned many medals at the junior level and was part of a team that collectively saw eight gold medals from the Youth National Championships in four years.
After coming to Ohio State, Coach Vanicek rowed briefly, but moved on to coach at Westerville Crew. He coached the varsity women for one year, seeing a lightweight 8+ to nationals. Afterwards, he coached the novice men for two years. During his time at Westerville, Cole spent time in small boats, racing in the 1x, 2x and 2-.
As a fourth year student at Ohio State, Coach Vanicek returned to the OSU Crew Club where he raced in each the JV8+, the lightweight 8+ and the V8+ over the next two years. He graduated in 2009 with degrees in Spanish and Biology.
This is Coach Vanicek’s first year coaching for Ohio State Crew Club, though his third year coaching novice men.
